The concept creates an exciting and inviting facility with a strong identity that can be observed both day and night/inside and out. The three theaters are expressed as three different forms organized around a skylit main lobby space that is the heart of the building. It is here that theater users interact with each other and view youth oriented artwork displays brought into the facility. Within the lobby is a main stair and stepped informal seating area that activates the space. The north side of the building has large expanses of shaded glass for natural light to penetrate deeply into the public spaces of the building and allow for great views towards the northern part of the site and the Persian Gulf. The building is 31% more energy efficient than ASHRAE 90.1 base guidelines, which is very challenging for a lab building to achieve. This success was based on great collaboration between the Owner, Architect and Contractor throughout the project. The building was designed to help create a new center of campus and provide for multi-disciplinary collaboration between departments in science and engineering. To foster this, the design included flexible lab spaces and open informal meeting spaces, including the main 3 story entry hall, that orient to the gorgeous surrounding landscape outside the building. It received high design acclaim from the University of Colorado Design Review Board, which called the building a "new benchmark" for the University system. Large expanses of glass and a vaulted ceiling help bring in lots of beautiful Colorado natural light and provide views to the Rocky Mountain foothills to the West. The small, dark, existing kitchen was remodeled to open out to the living room with a new concrete countertop.
